Visiting the Hill Country
The hill country rises steeply from the plains into a landscape of tea estates, waterfalls and cloud forest. Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,870 metres and can be genuinely cold at night, while Ella and Haputale are smaller towns on the edge of the escarpment with views down to the southern plains.
Most people experience the region from the railway. The line from Kandy through Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) to Ella is one of the most scenic train journeys in Asia, climbing through tea estates and tunnels. On foot, Horton Plains (World's End), Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock and the pre-dawn pilgrimage up Adam's Peak are the classic walks.
Getting there
The train is the scenic route: Kandy to Ella takes roughly 6.5-7 hours, depending on delays. By road, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is about 2.5-3 hours and Kandy to Ella about 4.5-5 hours. Colombo to Kandy is around 3 hours by road or train.
How long to stay
Plan on three to five nights: one or two around Nuwara Eliya or Haputale for Horton Plains and the tea estates, and two in Ella. Add a night in Dalhousie if you plan to climb Adam's Peak.
Where to base yourself
Ella for walking, cafes and a lively backpacker scene; Nuwara Eliya for colonial-era hotels and easy access to Horton Plains; Haputale for quieter guesthouses with big views; Dalhousie (Nallathanniya) for the Adam's Peak climb.
Getting around
Trains link the main towns, and buses fill the gaps on the winding mountain roads. Many travellers take the train for one or two scenic legs and a driver for the rest, since roads are slow and timetables thin.
Good to know before you go
- Reserved train seats for the Kandy-Ella stretch sell out quickly in high season. Book through the Sri Lanka Railways e-ticket system as soon as booking opens; unreserved second- and third-class tickets are also sold on the day at the station.
- The observation saloon at the end of some trains is first class. Second-class carriages with open windows often have better photo opportunities.
- The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season runs from the Unduvap Poya in December to the Vesak Poya in May. Outside that window, tea shops along the path are closed and the path lights may be off.
- Horton Plains opens at 6am. Cloud usually fills the valley below World's End by mid-morning, so arrive early. Bags are checked for plastic at the gate.
- Pack a warm layer: night temperatures in Nuwara Eliya can drop close to freezing in January and February.
