What are you planning to do in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka's four travel seasons

Understanding the two-monsoon system is the key to planning a good Sri Lanka trip.

Peak Season

December – March

Best weather on the south and west coasts. Dry hill country. Higher prices and crowds at popular sites. Book accommodation 4–8 weeks ahead.

East Coast Season

July – September

Dry and sunny on the east coast - Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Nilaveli. Whale watching from Trincomalee. Surfing peak at Arugam Bay. The south coast is wet.

Shoulder Season

April, Oct–Nov

Transitional months with lower prices and manageable weather. Some rain possible across the island. Good for budget travellers willing to accept some wet days.

Low Season (South)

May – August

Southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to the south and west coast. Cultural sites, hill country, and east coast still viable. Cheapest prices for south coast resorts.

Why "best time" depends on what you're doing

Sri Lanka is an unusually compact island - roughly the size of Ireland - but it sits at the meeting point of the Indian Ocean's two seasonal weather systems. The southwest monsoon(Yala, May to August) brings heavy rain to the south and west coasts, including Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and the hill country around Nuwara Eliya. During the same period, the northeast receives dry, sunny weather.

The northeast monsoon (Maha, November to February) reverses the pattern - the north and east become wetter, while the south and west enjoy their driest, most settled period. This is December-to-March peak season on the south coast.

The practical implication: there is no single universally bad time to visit Sri Lanka. There is almost always a corner of the island in its best weather. The challenge is knowing which corner to visit when - and the tool above calculates that based on your specific plans.

The south coast (December – March)

Mirissa, Unawatuna, Galle Fort, Bentota, and Hikkaduwa are at their absolute best from December to March. Seas are calm, skies are clear, and water temperatures hover around 28°C. This is also the prime whale watching season at Mirissa, with blue whales spotted reliably from November through April. January and February are the peak months - combine a Galle Fort exploration with a dawn whale watching trip for one of the most memorable travel experiences in South Asia.

The east coast (July – September)

When the southwest monsoon is hammering the south coast, Sri Lanka's east coast is in its dry season. Arugam Bay comes alive from April onwards, with the surfing season peaking June through August. Main Point, Pottuvil Point, and Elephant Rock offer world-class waves with far fewer surfers than you'd find at equivalent spots in Bali or Thailand.

Trincomalee and Nilaveli open up from May, with the clearest, calmest swimming conditions from July to September. This is also peak season for whale and dolphin watching from Trincomalee harbour, with blue whales and large spinner dolphin pods common sightings. Pigeon Island's coral reef snorkelling is best July-September when visibility is highest.

Hill country and cultural sites

The central highlands - Ella, Nuwara Eliya, and Kandy - receive rain from both monsoons, so timing here is less binary than the coasts. The driest and clearest period is January to April. January and February are particularly good for the Kandy–Ella train journey, with misty mornings giving way to clear afternoon views over tea country.

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) pilgrimage season runs December to May - the mountain is closed to visitors outside these months. The pre-dawn summit climb in January or February, arriving at the top for sunrise over a cloud sea, is one of Sri Lanka's most extraordinary experiences. Book accommodation in Dalhousie well ahead for the January-March peak.

Cultural Triangle sites - Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Anuradhapura - are accessible year-round but most comfortable October to April, when temperatures are lower and rainfall minimal. Climbing Sigiriya Rock in the midday heat of March or April is formidable; aim for an early morning start regardless of when you visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka overall?

December to March is the best all-round time to visit Sri Lanka. This is the dry season on the south and west coasts, the most popular tourist routes, and the hill country is clear. Temperatures are warm (26–30°C on the coast, 14–20°C in the hills) and rainfall is low across most of the island.

When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka's east coast?

July to September is the peak season on Sri Lanka's east coast - Trincomalee, Nilaveli, and Arugam Bay. The northeast trade winds bring dry, sunny weather to the east while the southwest monsoon hits the west coast. This is also peak season for whale watching from Trincomalee and the prime surfing window at Arugam Bay.

When is the best time to see whales in Sri Lanka?

There are two main windows. At Mirissa on the south coast: November to April, with January to March being peak season for blue and sperm whale sightings. At Trincomalee on the east coast: June to September, coinciding with the east coast dry season. Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world to see blue whales - the largest animals on Earth.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka for a safari?

February to July is the best overall window for wildlife safaris at Yala National Park. February and March are peak season - water levels drop, animals concentrate around remaining waterholes, and leopard and elephant sightings are most reliable. Minneriya National Park peaks in August–September during the 'Gathering' - when hundreds of wild elephants congregate around the reservoir.

Can you visit Sri Lanka during the monsoon?

Yes - Sri Lanka's two-monsoon system means that one side of the island is almost always in dry season. When the southwest monsoon hits the south and west coast (May–August), the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) is in its dry season and vice versa. The central highlands (Ella, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya) receive rain from both monsoons and are best from December to April.

Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

December is excellent for the south coast, hill country, and cultural sites. The southwest monsoon has ended, the northeast monsoon (which mainly affects the far north) is winding down, and most of the island is warm and dry. It is also peak tourist season, so accommodation prices are higher and popular sites (Nine Arches Bridge, Sigiriya) are busier. Book in advance for December trips.

When is the cheapest time to visit Sri Lanka?

May to August offers the lowest prices on the south and west coast - this is the low season there due to the southwest monsoon. Guesthouse and hotel prices can drop 30–50% from peak. However, this coincides with peak season and higher prices on the east coast. April and October–November are shoulder months - reasonable prices with manageable weather across most of the island.
