Visiting the East Coast
The east coast runs on the opposite weather calendar to the south and west. When the south-west monsoon hits Galle and Mirissa between about May and September, the east is usually dry and calm - which makes it the natural beach choice for a summer trip.
The coast splits into two quite different areas. In the north-east, Trincomalee has one of the deepest natural harbours in the world, Hindu temples, and the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, with snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park. Further south, Arugam Bay is a small surf town with consistent right-hand point breaks, close to the lagoons and birdlife of Kumana National Park.
Getting there
Trincomalee is about 5-6 hours by road from Colombo, or about 2 hours from Habarana and Sigiriya, which makes it an easy add-on to the Cultural Triangle. Arugam Bay is most easily reached from Ella (roughly 3-3.5 hours via Monaragala) or from the Yala area.
How long to stay
Three or four nights in one area. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are more than 6 hours apart by road, so most people choose one rather than trying to do both.
Where to base yourself
Uppuveli or Nilaveli rather than Trincomalee town for the beach; Pasikudah for a calm, shallow bay with larger resorts; Arugam Bay for surfing and a relaxed, café-lined main road.
Getting around
Tuk-tuks are the main local transport, and Arugam Bay is easy to explore by rented scooter or bicycle. Buses connect the larger towns along the coast road, but services are less frequent than in the south.
Good to know before you go
- The main beach season is roughly April to September; the north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from about November to January.
- Arugam Bay's surf season is roughly April or May to October. Outside those months many guesthouses close, and the point breaks can go flat.
- Pigeon Island trips leave from Nilaveli in the morning. Don't stand on or touch the coral, and expect the island to be busy on weekends.
- The east coast has large Tamil and Muslim communities. Dress more conservatively in towns than on the beach.
