Visiting the Western Province
Almost every trip to Sri Lanka starts and ends on the west coast, because Bandaranaike International Airport sits just north of Colombo. Many travellers treat the region purely as a transit zone, but it rewards a day or two: Colombo has the island's best restaurants, a compact colonial-era Fort district, the Pettah bazaars and Geoffrey Bawa's modernist buildings, while the coast south of the city is lined with beach towns that are easy to reach on the expressway.
On this site the "Western" region is a traveller's grouping rather than a strict administrative one. It covers Colombo, Negombo and the beaches down to Bentota, plus two inland day trips - Pinnawala and the white-water river at Kitulgala - that sit just across the border in Sabaragamuwa Province.
Getting there
The airport (CMB) is at Katunayake, about 35 km north of central Colombo. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway gets you into the city in roughly 30-45 minutes outside rush hour; Negombo is only 15-20 minutes from the terminal, which is why many people spend their first or last night there.
How long to stay
One full day covers Colombo's main sights. Add a night in Negombo if you land late or fly out early, and two or three nights if you want a beach stay at Bentota or Beruwala.
Where to base yourself
Colombo for food and city life (Colombo 3 and 7 are the calmest, most walkable districts); Negombo for airport convenience; Bentota and Beruwala for larger beach resorts and river trips.
Getting around
Ride-hailing apps (PickMe and Uber) work well in Colombo and are cheaper and less stressful than flagging tuk-tuks. The coastal railway from Colombo Fort runs south past Bentota to Galle, and the Southern Expressway connects Colombo to Galle in about 1.5-2 hours by car.
Good to know before you go
- Colombo traffic peaks roughly 7-9am and 5-8pm - schedule airport runs and city sightseeing around those windows.
- Temples such as Gangaramaya require covered shoulders and knees; shoes and hats come off at the entrance.
- The west coast sea is rough during the south-west monsoon (roughly May-September). Beaches stay open but swimming is often unsafe - follow the flags.
- On Poya (full-moon) days, alcohol sales are banned and many shops close. Check the calendar before planning a night out.
